This might sound weird coming from me- stanchly anti -capital punishment- and I know that they find it warm and cozy up in America’s ass, but there is something about going into another country committing a crime, one serious enough to warrant the death penalty, and not paying their price. Egads, it almost sounds like cultural relativism-we surely can’t apply that to Americans can we?

Back to the peeps without insurance, and the organic, fairly traded, hemp-laced, patchouli- scented, crocs- wearing double edged sword that every indignant justice demanding yuppie  should constantly struggle with. We who are lucky enough to say, why take the chance? Bear with me here, there is a point. I am going on the assumption that it is cheaper to produce items that are potentially harmful and helpful-this may or may not be true, but you have to start somewhere.  If a person doesn’t have health insurance they will have to pay for the shots-if only the more expensive are legal, they go without. If we find out that non-organic food is killing us should we make it illegal? I don’t buy organic, i follow the “ack, you and your brother turned out fine” philosophy because I think the stress of reading and researching every label will kill you first, and being on the outer edges of yuppiedom, it is just too damn expensive. It just seems extreme to ban something on the basis of what might happen, takes away choice right? Of course, myself, a freakin librarian, didn’t know that my lucky baby was getting the good shots until now, how would a 16 year old from a country with no healthcare be able to make a choice?

Sitting around the staffroom yesterday shootin the stuff the topic turns to what will kill you today and save you tomorrow. Up comes flu shots, and babies and autism. I brush it off but the wheels are churning (not a typo I assure you). I find out the potential, alleged, supposed, chemical responsible is called thimerosal. Frantically browsing it catches my eye- “banned in New York State”. There is the issue of cost of course meaning those without health insurance may not be able to vaccinate their kids, but my selfish side was thankful that I live in the only nation God cares about;) Here is a link to the vaccine info.

Today I felt this weird sense of pride in Brooklyn, weird because I’m not from here. I’m on the B1 coming to work and this, I’m guessing, Eastern European guy gets on. No change and no metrocard. The driver tells him to get change from someone on the bus, so this babushka (older Russian lady) and myself start fishing and counting and just give it to him so he doesn’t get left in the rain. He sits and watches. Latina gets on carrying her nina, and the stroller, babushka grabs the stroller, ajashi (older Korean man) gets up so she can sit down and I grab the change she fumbles with to give it to the driver. All of this is automatic, and I hope he notices so that the next time he reads a nasty post about this place, for example some moron referring to it as a group home without the meds, he knows better.

He may want to mention however that yes it would be a lot better if the 99 cent stores stopped issuing driver’s licenses.

has to be The Space Between Us by Thrity N. Umrigar; this is the kind of book that makes a reader hard to please. Better than The Kite Runner, and that is saying a lot. I was under the sheets with a flashlight, so as not to wake up Gordo, and then the @#@1 batteries died!  I actually went running around the house looking for another set. Gasped out loud at one point (don’t need to give you a hint, because you will know when you get to it) and cried when it was done because now what the heck am I gonna do? I was forced to watch TV last night because the library was closed, luckily Simpsons and Family Guy were on.

Last night you were laughing in your sleep, you do this a lot my happy little man. I started thinking about the different kinds of laughs you were sure to share as you got older. Kind ones, mean ones, happy ones and distancing ones- the ones easterners ( well, the Scottish ones anyway) are famous for, when things are bad and you have to in order to get by. The last ones I hope you seldom make, the kind ones I hope to have a part in provoking, happy ones, I’m sure there will be plenty…and the mean ones? We are human and I know sometimes we weaken, even a golden boy like you. I only hope that I can provide an example by being as kind as possible to everyone around me. I wish for you true strength, the kind that comes from knowing you are loved and deserving of your space here. It’s only on that basis that we can treat those around us with respect. This applies to the way others will treat you- it saddens me to even imagine anyone ever hurting you, but it is inevitable. I just hope that you remember that anyone that hurts you is simply hurting, may compassion outweigh anger. You should also understand the boundaries of compassion, and I guess forgiveness- neither of these mean you should stay involved in a situation that harms you. You simply move on, with yourself intact and don’t spend energy on hate or vengence. Have I always lived like this? No, but I hope you will be better than me.

A lot of pressure on a five month old baby, right? A lot of pressure on anyone, again you won’t always remember to live like this,and that is okay- just try and the other times you can blame me.

Today I’m more under the impression that Brooklyn is like a group home without the meds. I don’t even want to go into why for fear that what I say will mortify my more pc friends back in Halifax. I have probably said more than enough. We are moving to Bensonhurst.
